Escape the Madness

If you’re like me, you’ve had a difficult time these past few days. Maybe not because of who won the election necessarily, but because of the tension that seems to be everywhere we look. I want you first to know that I love and accept each and every one of you, no matter who you voted for, no matter how your beliefs, decisions, views, and pathways differ from my own. I fully embrace the diversity of my army of amazing readers, and I want you to know that you’re in a safe place here, with me. My hopes are that we can pull through this time as one, learn from each other, look past our differences, and lead our children, and our nation, toward a bright future, in whatever ways that may materialize.

That being said, I’d like to offer you a chance to breathe, take a step back, and get a small reprieve from the noise, the best way I know how. Reading is such an amazing way to relax, give our monkey brains a rest from the constant chatter up there, and treat ourselves to a mental vacation. I encourage you to breathe, love, and read your way into peace, and–of course–I’ve got plenty of free books to give you, so you don’t even have to spend a dime to do it. 😉

Howdy, and welcome, those of you who have traveled by way of the Band of Dystopian 3rd Annual Zombie Crawl. I’m super excited to be involved in it this year, because I adore this group, and I’ve also got a very special exclusive sneak peek planned for you hungry travelers.

Make sure to read all the way to the end! There, you’ll find details on how to enter my giveaway, a link to snag a free book from me, and a list of all participating blogs for this year’s zombie crawl.

A lot of you may know me as the author of the YA Dystopian Scifi Treemakers Trilogy. You may also know that I have an obsession with zombies as well as all things end-of-days. Some of you may be waiting patiently (or not so patiently😉 ) for the final installment of said trilogy, which will be available for preorder on Halloween (Yay!).

What you may not know yet is what’s on the horizon for me once this trilogy is complete.

One guess.

If you said zombies, it’s probably because it’s pretty damn obvious. Haha

Of course, this is me we’re talking about, so don’t expect your normal, everyday zombie story.

I’ve been working on a handful of stories over the past two years, a few of which I’ve decided to move up on my runway. The one I’ll publish by next Halloween is titled “Breakout,” and it features a convict named Corey Meyers. I’ll be publishing this one under C.L. Rozelle to differentiate my YA work from my adult. After “Breakout,” I’ll be working on an intense NA zombie story, which I’ll publish under my full name. So, stay tuned for loads of zombie awesomeness from yours truly, beginning next year.

Teaser, followed by excerpt from “Breakout”

breakout-teaser-1excerpt from “Breakout”

When the shouting and gunfire had moved off, I peeked over the counter and out through the window. No one in sight.

I scanned the switchboard until I found the one marked “Emergency Alarm,” and flipped it down. The deafening blast ceased, replaced by the faraway echoes of shouting and weapons firing, the scent of blood and gunpowder in the air. I realized then I was in the middle of a war zone.

“Meyers,” a voice whispered, scaring the shit out of me.

I peered into the shadows where Driggs was slumped against the wall in a dark corner.

I moved to his side. “Driggs, what’s happening?”

“You get it, and . . . a week later, you do this . . . to people.” He cocked his head to show me the crater in his pale neck, its sticky wetness shining black in the pulsating emergency lights.

“Damn, dude . . . like zombies and shit?”

He unstrapped his gun from its holster. “You got kids, right?”

“A daughter, yeah.” The sudden thought of Sarina brought a rush of panic. “Is it . . . out there, too?”

“Take my gun.” He tapped his holster. “Go to her.”

I hesitated for only a moment before I snatched up the gun. “Thanks, man.”

“You bet. I know . . . what you’re in here for, Corey. Losing . . . someone you love . . . can make you do . . . crazy things. Now’s your chance . . . to make up for it. Go find . . . your baby.”

“Thanks. I appreciate you saying that.”

As I held his gaze, something dawned on me: Rousseau. He could still be alive, and trapped, too.

“Driggs, where’s Rousseau?”

“Where . . . you were,” he panted. “A few . . . doors down. There’s a button . . . on the red . . . panel . . .” He moaned again, then gasped.

Again I scanned the switchboard until I found one section in the corner covered by a clear plastic box—rows of black switches protruding from a red panel marked “Emergency Release.” I raised the cover, found the ones for the solitary cells, and flipped them all in one swift motion.

“Hey, man.” Driggs chuckled.

I stopped on my way to the doorway. “Yeah?”

“Happy . . . Halloween.”

For a second I stood there, stunned. Halloween. The day the world had fallen apart and hell had come to Earth. The day I would be getting another chance at life.

I hope you enjoyed that. More to come!

From A Hopeless State

On this day 12 years ago I woke up and emerged from my dark cocoon for the first time. Behind me was a devastated past, leveled by the wake of my pain and rage, and my many addictions. I’d lost everything; my pride, my soul, my hope, my dreams, my dignity, and perhaps worst of all, my daughter.

I rolled out of a strange bed in a strange place and planted my bare feet on strange carpet. I took a sober breath, and there it was, in the soil of my sadness, a tiny green sprout of hope. The air smelled sweeter, and when I heard the birds outside of my window, they weren’t the machine gun melody I’d remembered from the days before. They sang a song of reassurance, of encouragement, and rebirth.

That day I made a decision: I’d open my heart to these people and let them help me. I’d admit that I was powerless over so many things, and I’d be willing to go to any lengths to get better. I wanted to learn how to live differently, to be happy, fulfilled, and high on life. I wanted to put the past behind me and start fresh, and I wanted, more than words could say, to have my little girl back, and to learn how to be a good mother.

It took many years and a lot of stumbles to get to where I am today. I’m so grateful that I got right back up and tried again those times I stumbled. I kept searching for the light, kept seeking my own truths, kept opening my mind and heart for ways to continue healing from a (mostly) self-induced traumatic past, and I kept forgiving myself (and others) for not being perfect. I learned to be true to myself and to follow my bliss, and eventually my path led me to the amazing life I lead today.

But when I say amazing, I don’t mean easy. I’m now a single parent of four children. The past I left behind is riddled with broken pieces. The financial abyss is one of nightmares, of which I’m sure many of you can relate. Finally finding the right therapy for my Borderline Personality Disorder helped me recover from a hopeless state of mind and body, but I still have BPD tendencies, and I still have weak moments that bring me to my knees in tears behind closed doors . . . My life is definitely not easy.

But I’m a mother today, and I’m showing my children the way. I’m a daughter my parents are proud of. I’m a loving sister and friend, a giver, an encourager, inspirer, survivor, and overcomer. I’m a beacon of light and hope for those lost in so many dark oceans. I’m proof that there is a way out, and that all is not as lost as it seems. I’m following my dreams and showing you that it is, indeed, possible to go through hell and come out of it alive, and not just alive, but actually living life.

Today I’m grateful for my past and see it as an asset, despite the immense pain, heartbreak, and turmoil there. Not only do I use it all to breathe life into my stories, which, in itself is very cathartic for me, but I also use it to relate to others who may be experiencing similar hells in their own lives. I use it to bear witness. I use it to guide, love, and understand my children as they grow into adults. I use it to remember to be grateful for all I have, to cherish every moment I get to experience life. Because today, I get to, when there were many times I thought I never would. But I do, I am, and I cherish every second because nothing is promised. Today is a gift to that shattered young girl who will forever reside in my heart, the one I once thought would never make it out alive. She did. And I’m so very glad she did. ❤

Introducing: Rissa Blakeley, Author of the “Shattered Lives” Series

be different

First, I want to thank Christina for inviting me to write a post for her blog. I hope she didn’t hear or see me laugh maniacally while rubbing my hands together.

Second, I’d like to ask you, the reader, a question…

Have you ever asked an author what genre they write? I’m going to take a wild guess and say yes. Have you ever looked at them oddly when they spit and sputter, trying to explain what genre?

This is my life.

I’ve always had issues finding where my books fall, genre-wise. My series, Shattered Lives, was difficult to place. When readers asked what genre it was, I couldn’t figure out what to say. After Broken Dreams had been out nearly a year, I went with post-apocalyptic with a paranormal twist. It seemed fitting. Originally, I marketed it as paranormal romance, but that didn’t stick due to the lack of…romance, I guess. They are in survival mode. Who has time, or resources, to light candles and put on some Barry White?

I used to try to keep the presence of zombies…or undeads, as my characters call them…in Shattered Lives in the background. I didn’t want my books to be stereotyped for one main reason: Shattered Lives is not about the zombies. It’s about relationships, overcoming real-life relationship situations, and moving forward. Take out zombie and insert…a man eating cheeseburger that lures you in with its delicious cheesy aroma, all while leaving a trail of floppy pickles behind. I find this utterly terrifying due to the fact that I am an unapologetic cheeseburger junkie.

All silliness aside, I like to change people’s minds. I like knowing they walked in blindly and came out with a new perspective. Many have, and that brings me to a level of happiness with my writing I never thought I could obtain. I suppose some would look at it as deceptive, but I see it as a surprise plotline. I love a good plot twist. I want to be kept guessing and yelling, “What the ^@#* just happened?!”

Am I the only one?

As of June 7th, I published my sixth novel. While still working on Shattered Lives, The King’s Fate (Corvidae Guard #1) is an entirely new series and genre for me. I did it again, folks. I found it difficult to place. I started off thinking it would be a true paranormal romance, but was left with something along the lines of dark fantasy/dark fairy-tale/paranormal/paranormal romance… This could take all day. Due to the presence of Fae, Angels, and Vampires, The King’s Fate is more grounded in the fantasy genre than anything else.

I think I will always wonder where my books and I fit into the writing world. I’m not one for being boxed in, nor do I like someone pointing a finger at me, telling me what kind of writer I am. As I continue on this path, the forks are aplenty! My writing and I are always evolving, never fitting into the popular scene, but keeping true to myself. There are a lot of authors who write what’s popular to get on that wagon. That’s great for them, but for me? It’s not likely to happen. It’s not that I’m being unconventional. It’s just who I am. Unless I’m driving the bandwagon, I’m not going to hop on it.

That is how I came up with the #BeDifferentReadDifferent tag. It encompasses me and my writing. Does it bother me that I can’t seem to place my finger on the right buttons? Yeah, sometimes, but then it reminds me of who I am as an individual. I am unique and I see my writing in a similar manner.

While still edging on being an amateur, I feel like I’m transitioning. Not only with my writing, but myself, as well. I’m not quite there yet, but much farther than I have ever been. My writing has changed tremendously since I first decided to put pen to paper. I started as one of those readers who say, “How hard could it possibly be to write a novel?” I was wrong…so very, very wrong. I am thankful to all the individuals (special shout-out to the Dragon Mamas) who have helped me get my name out there, who have helped me develop into the author I am today. I’ve learned so much, and I plan to continue to grow.

I want to keep learning, keep transitioning, keep writing books outside the norm. I feel as if I can keep digging, I will make it to the other side. I hope to see you there.

A native New Yorker, Rissa is now a Georgia transplant, who is completely addicted to black coffee, La Croix and obsessively listens to songs on repeat. Her days are full of characters screaming for more scenes, cats living up to their Harry Potter namesakes, a lazy dog, a teenage daughter bringing Emo back, and a Viking husband, who finds her puns less than funny.
